The undisputed highlight of the square is the Convent of San Esteban. Its impressive Plateresque facade, considered one of the masterpieces of the Spanish Renaissance, completely dominates the space. Christopher Columbus stayed at the convent and it was there that he presented his project to the Dominicans.
Adjacent to the square is also the Huerto de Calixto y Melibea, a romantic garden associated with the work La Celestina and offering spectacular views of the Tormes River and the Cathedral. The Monterrey Palace can also be seen from the square, though only a portion of it is visible.
